An Early Connection

Academic success, persistence and graduation in a timely manner are goals we have for all of our enrolled students. We know that a strong campus connection early in the academic experience is crucial for meeting these goals.

An early connection at Appalachian begins with Orientation, Phase 1 and is followed by Orientation, Phase 2 for all new students. Since the early 1990's, Appalachian has been developing a comprehensive one-on-one academic advising program to enhance this early connection with students. The Academic Advising Center helps to monitor and assist students in their academic achievement. A strong connection to campus is further developed for students via the recently redesigned First Year Seminar. Our new General Education curriculum will be implemented in full for entering freshmen in Fall 2009. This new curriculum structure focuses on four educational goals and associated outcomes that promote: 1)broad based, interdisciplinary knowledge, 2)higher level transferable skills, 3)the connection between local and global issues and environments, and 4)a sense of personal and social responsibility as applied to problems.

Student Involvement and Academic Engagement

Research has shown that the greater a student's engagement and involvement in college, the more successful he/she will be in academics and personal development. The University is now striving to provide better student services through more collaborative efforts between Student Development and Academic Affairs. The following programs, offices, and services have a proven track record of success in terms of actively engaging students in both academics and co-curricular activities.

Continually Monitoring Student Progress

While academic responsibilities lie with the students, a comprehensive support system is extremely important for making sure that students do not fall through the cracks. Appalachian's Academic Progress Reporting program helps ensure that first year students and students in academic difficulty are provided early feedback on their semester progress. Advisors are alerted through this system as well. Other offices across campus provide a network of support on issues ranging from wellness to career planning.
